Sushisho Meino | A Gentleness That Can’t Be Replicated

Among Tabelog-silver sushi restaurants, Sushisho Meino is a standout. Trained under the female master of Sushi Arai, with a wine cellar far deeper than the average sushi restaurant, and a reservation that’s genuinely hard to land — it carries a distinct personality from the very start.

The whole restaurant is wrapped in a rare kind of gentleness. Gentle in how the master and staff treat guests, gentle in the mood at the counter, gentle in the style of cooking. But that gentleness isn’t thin or lightweight — the ingredients are excellent and the seasoning finely tuned, so the sense of satisfaction ends up unusually solid.
Many of the dishes seem to happen quietly at the counter — soft, hushed, fine-lined. But the moment they actually reach your mouth, the flavor and satisfaction genuinely catch you off guard.

This, I think, is what makes friends who’ve eaten here all feel that Sushisho Meino is unique, hard to replicate, and worth thinking back on. It takes a very distinctive point of view and turns a softness rarely found in sushi restaurants into a complete, coherent style.

⭐️Half of the sake pairings rest on the strength of the ingredients themselves, the other half carries a touch of fusion-style expression. You’ll see oversized botan shrimp stacked in layers, and the tip of an ark shell curling ever so slightly after being tenderized — beautiful in a very specific way.
There’s also tuna rolled into spring rolls with a touch of walnut, propping up a nutty note and gentle sweetness. Or seasonal vegetables and seafood made into a terrine — firm in texture, yet the flavor stays clean and fresh, with the feel of spring and its sweetness sitting comfortably together. The fried kohada comes with a sauce whipped from egg white, unexpectedly light, keeping the fried element clean.

🍣The sushi itself lies gracefully, piece after piece, at the counter. Served at a slightly lower temperature than the nigiri at many restaurants, which only adds a clearer layer of clarity and balance.
The quality of the tuna is visibly excellent, and its presentation has its own memorable touches. The akami carries an almost jelly-like texture, the chutoro’s fat unfolds slowly as you chew, and the otoro is gently sweet. By the time the ohagi arrives, a bit of scallion white jumps in to balance out the whole. Throughout, the happiness of being the one eating just keeps rising and layering on top of itself.

🥂The wine selection has a distinctive sensibility too — good choices both by the glass and by the bottle, even some champagne allocations rarely seen elsewhere. And beyond the usual understanding of champagne and white wine with sushi, the red wines on the list turn out to have a real affinity with the food as well.
